McGwire has signed a multi year deal to be the Cardinals hitting coach. My guess is that the signing of McGwire is a condition of LaRussa returning. It is no secret that LaRussa is McGwire's biggest fan, he brought him to St. Louis from Oakland back in 1996. Discuss amongst yourselves.

I don't see how this can help the Cardinals. McGwire was a great player, but he isn't in the Hall of Fame for one reason - and everyone knows what that is.
Maybe it was a stipulation to bring back LaRussa, but is it worth it? I don't know if he's ever coached before, and he's going to find himself back in the spotlight. Should be interesting.

Reports are that McGwire has been helping out some cardinals in the offseason already. It is no secret LaRussa is a big is a big fan of Mark, and has been trying to get him in as a coach for a few years now.
I do think it can pose as a distraction for the team, but hopefully that will pass in spring training.

There is, in my opinion, something about McGwire that screams "not a coach." I really can't say why I feel that way, but I don't see him as a hitting coach. Not only was he a natural power guy, but he made power his sole focus. He lacks the necessary experience as any type of other hitter to actually be effective to the players not blessed with heaps of power.
