Twins offseason musings

A few links to share about the Twins during the early parts of the offseason:

-Here's a live webcam of the club's new ballpark, Target Field
-A funny take from ESPN's Page 2 on the contract negotiations between GM Bill Smith and superstar and 2010 free agent C Joe Mauer
-A look back at a tough decision (the right one made by Minnesota) in 2001 when the Twins drafted Mauer over Mark Prior. That draft also saw Mark Teixeira and David Wright go in the first round with Ryan Howard going later as well as Edwin Jackson, Dan Uggla, Stephen Drew and Kevin Youkilis. Who would you pick #1 overall if you could do it today?

Clearly the choice would be between Teixeira, Wright, Mauer, and Howard.

It's tough to narrow it down from there. Howard is a constant supply of 45+ homers. Teixeira is similar, but with excellent defense.

I'd say it comes down to Wright and Mauer. I'm not sure about Mauer's defense, but Wright is definitely one of the best at third base. Both catcher and third lack good offensive players, but Mauer really stands out amongst the other catchers.

I think the Twins made the right decision. I'd go with Mauer as well (provided he plays a full season).

I'd probably go Mauer as well. Then Wright, Teix and Howard. I'm not too upset with the 5th pick in that draft either, Youkilis. His .413/.548/.961 was 2nd/5th/2nd in the AL this year.
